After coming off a great victory against their divisional opponents, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Jacksonville Jaguars kicked off their home opener against the reigning Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jaguars were walking into week 2 after an impressive win, but could they keep up the momentum? Sadly, Patrick Mahomes and company spoiled the Jaguars homecoming with a victory of 17-9.
In week 1, the Chiefs did not have two of their Pro Bowl players, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones. Unfortunately, the two started their first starts of the season against the Jaguars in Jacksonville. As the game started, the Jaguars made it seem like having Travis Kelce didn’t matter much. The defense was disrupting former MVP Patrick Mahomes rhythm the whole game. Jaguar’s defense was the biggest concern going into this game from the expert’s point of view. Defying the experts the Jaguars kept the rushing game to 22 carries and a total of 100 yards on the ground. Taking away the rushing game was a key point to disrupt the Chief’s gameplan. The biggest surprise was the secondary was able to hold their own against the Chief’s explosive receivers. At the end of the day, the defense was not the reason the Jaguars did not claim a victory this past Sunday.
Coming into this game, the Jaguars offense was the Chief’s focal point of the game planning. Unfortunately, the hype did not live up to expectations. Despite an amazing game by Christian Kirk, with 11 catches and 110 receiving yards, Jacksonville’s offense was a dud. The running game did not get any traction and stalled out with 18 carries and 74 yards on the ground. The hopeful third-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence tried to put the game on his back and claim the victory. But as fate would have it Lawrence would fall short. Ended the game with a stat line of 22/41, 216 yards, and 0 touchdowns, but not from Trevor’s effort. Lawrence tried to get the ball into the endzone 11 times but could not get the job done. 4 of the passes were defended very well, 5 of them were dropped by the receivers or caught out of bounds and 2 of the passes were overthrown. Not being able to capitalize on being in the red zone caused the Jaguars to adjust their game plan to nothing but pass the ball and become one-dimensional.
The Jacksonville Jaguars get to stay at home and play division opponents, the Houston Texans. With Houston being plagued with injuries, the Jaguars can come away with the victory very handily with the explosive weapons on offense.
