Monday Morning Arm-Chair QB (Jags-49ers)

“Oh no! We suck again!”

Rob Schneider: Townie

Well, that sucked.

The 49ers met the Jaguars out at the flag pole after school and beat the S#%t out of them to the tune of a 34-3 beatdown.

All the happy feelings Jag fans had after a 5-game win streak were quickly replaced with that familiar feeling of, “oh no, we suck again!” In the big picture, the Jaguars most likely don’t suck again, but the team came up short on what many national media outlets dubbed a “measuring stick game” against an “elite” NFC team, albeit, an “elite” team on a 3-game losing streak.

The 49ers would never outright say in public that they believe they are a title contender but anyone that looks at that roster and coaching staff and says they aren’t a contender doesn’t know what they are talking about. A team built like the 49ers was a dangerous team for anyone to go against this Sunday, now add in a 3-game losing streak, coming out of a bye, picking up a young stud in Chase Young at the trade deadline, and a chip on their shoulder, this was a recipe for disaster, the Jags were just the lucky ones on the schedule.

Now that doesn’t excuse the Jaguars for coming out and playing like they did. The Jaguars have a damn good roster and a Super Bowl-winning coach to guide them through games just like this. If the Jaguars are serious about taking the next step and playing into February, showing up and competing in games like this is an important step in the process. If the Jaguars went out on the field and were competitive and still lost, that’s one thing, but to go out and put up a dud and only score 3 points is a problem.

Publicly I’m sure the team will say it was a team (non)effort in the loss and they’ll take this as a lesson learned and move on to prep for the next game. But Jags fans want to see head’s role and if I had to guess, I would assume the head fans want to see rolling down 95 is that of offensive coordinator Press Taylor. The fan base has called out the play-calling on offense all year and yet nothing seems to be changing. Now, there is a reason the fans are in the stands and the coaches are on the sideline but from the output on the field, especially against the 49ers, there’s something wrong and it needs to be fixed. Trevor has an elite arm yet he seems to be a screen pass specialist these days. The o-line hasn’t been world class and the 49ers have some household names on the d-line that do require quick passes but with an extra week to prepare I would like to think the Jags would be able to drum up more than a field goal in 4 quarters of football.

I could go into the stats all day long but a toddler could tell you the offense the Jags put on the field yesterday was garbage. The team has elite players and there is no excuse for what happened. The defense didn’t have a fantastic day either but when your offense keeps coughing up the ball and going 3 and out all day, it makes it that more tough for the defense to make stops. The Jaguars are still in the hunt for a top seed with Baltimore taking a loss yesterday but with the Texans now only a game back in the race for the AFC South, the Jags need to pull up their big boy pants and start playing at an elite level because if not, we really are going to suck again.

I'm a passionate sports fan and have been for most of my life. When I moved to northeast Florida in 1995 I immediately became a diehard Jags fan and have suffered with them since. I grew to enjoy writing about sports when I spent a short time as a sports reporter for a small-town newspaper.
