The Titans Conditioning Program is a Gift and a Curse

The Titans had a number of players at the podium yesterday and, there was one thing that stood out to me. THE TITANS CONDITIONING ROUTINE. While I do love the that the Titans take conditioning very serious, a debate can definitely be had about how hard they should be going this time of year.

Newly acquired CB Sean Murphy-Bunting spoke about how the Titans done things differently than other teams. He mentioned that they were pushing sleds on Mondays. He said that it is “Enjoyable and it feels like you’re working towards something”.

LB Azeez Al-Shaair shared the same sentiment and added that “It kind of reminds you of like a freshman coming into college and you’re like what the hell is going on”.

OL Daniel Brunskill went into detail about how teams have different philosophies when it comes to conditioning saying that:

“Every team has a different philosophy. Some teams make sure guys aren’t getting injured. They’re kind of just doing enough to like where guys are in shape and able to do the things that they can. He added that “There’s definitely a philosophy of sometimes doing not enough just to stay healthy is good to a certain point but then, you start to get going and you see injuries happen that way”.

Brunskill nailed it in my opinion. Teams do have a different philosophy when it comes to conditioning. The risk and reward are the same as well when it comes to both. For the Titans, they have gotten the short end of the stick with their approach over the last couple of years. The Titans broke the record for the most players fielded in 2021 and finished first again in that category in 2022. They also placed the most players on injured reserve last season.

While I do believe in training and grinding hard, you have to balance it out. You can’t go hard every single day and expect to hold up over the course of time. Injuries are going to happen no matter what but, maybe the Titans should think about dialing it back a bit and also learn when to turn the knob up and down.

Marvin Harrison made me a fan. I had a chance to see him play at Syracuse while visiting family. Watching him play was exciting and really got me into football. When he got drafted to Indy, that’s when I became a fan.
