Is It Time To Panic?

Fresh off their third consecutive loss, the Colts are now sitting at 3-5, third in the AFC South. The story in those defeats has been the turnovers and bad secondary performance. Since becoming the full-time starter, quarterback Gardner Minshew has 9 total turnovers in three games. Colts secondary has been really bad after losing cornerback Dallis Flowers and rookie cornerback Julius Brents, who suffered an injury week 6 vs Jacksonville Jaguars.

Colts who are already thin at cornerback position are relying on veteran cornerback Kenny Moore and backup cornerbacks Darrel Baker Jr and Tony Brown Jr each week. In week 7, Baker had two critical penalties that led to a Browns victory, and in week 8 Tony Brown Jr struggled defending New Orleans Saints wide receivers. Brown was very critical of himself after the performance.

With the recent struggles, it poses a questions for Colt fans. Should the Colts make a move for cornerback help or should they panic and be sellers at 3-5? The Colts organization usually don’t make moves during the season but last season they traded running back Nyheim Hines for running back Zack Moss, who is currently 2nd in rushing yards behind Christian McCaffrey. The trade deadline is today at 4 pm.

There are two personal favorites I would like the Colts to pursue should they make a trade. Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain ll and Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who recently been given permission by the team to seek a trade since they couldn’t agree on a contract extension. Broncos are expecting to be sellers and made Surtain ll available in trade talks. Surtain ll is a former first round pick in the 2021 NFL draft is only 23 years old and is under contract through 2025.

Johnson on the other hand is looking for a new contract. He was a second round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and in the final year of his rookie contract. Adding either Surtain ll or Johnson to the cornerback room would be an instant upgrade over Darrel Baker Jr and Tony Brown Jr.

I began to watch the Colts when former Colts running back Marshall Faulk was the running back and Jim Harbaugh was the starting QB. It wasn’t until 1998 when Peyton Manning was selected with the first overall pick of the 1998 NFL draft, which solidified me as a fan of the Indianapolis Colts. I frequently travel to home games in Indianapolis and away games just so I could support my beloved team. Two of my greatest accomplishments are engaging with Colts fans on a Facebook group I created called “Horseshoe Mob” back in 2018. My other accomplishment is starting a podcast called “You Don’t Know JAC” with Chris Jackson and Austin Cook, which we have now renamed “Horseshoe Mob”. At the time I started the podcast, I had no idea it would start a brotherhood that would last for a lifetime.
