Should the Colts sign a veteran cornerback?

Last week, it was reported by SportsHandle of an Indianapolis Colts player is under investigation for “pervasive wagering activities.” Per Source, there was a sports book account allegedly used by an associate of Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr, which placed 100 of bets, including bets on the Colts. Bets would range from $25-$50 with at least one low four figure bet. If Rodgers is found guilty, he could face a lengthy suspension up to a lifetime ban. Rodgers issued a statement regarding the investigation.

Rodgers is in the final year of a four-year deal he signed back 2020. Remember, Rodgers was drafted back in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Rodgers scored his first career touchdown on a 101-yard kick return in a Week 5 loss to the Browns. In Year 2, Rodgers took a high leap posting 49 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 7 passes defended. In 2022, Rodgers had a down year, starting only 9 games posting 24 tackles and a force fumble. He also dealt with a knee injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Rodgers was in prime position to start the 2023 season after Colts traded Stephon Gilmore and former Colts cornerback Brandon Facyson retuned to Las Vegas Raiders. With a suspension looming over Rodgers’ head, the Colts could potentially start the season with two rookies cornerbacks (Julius Brents and Darius Rush) on the outside. Colts used three of their 12 draft picks on cornerbacks. If you’re wondering, the Colts did not know of the recent allegations prior to making those selections. Cornerback was a NEED because they were thin at the position. Brents and Rush were ranked high in press coverage.

On the latest episode of the Horseshoe Mob podcast with special guest, Megan Hall we talked about the Colts could choose to go with the young cornerbacks or they could look to sign some veteran cornerbacks in Marcus Peters or Byron Jones from free agency. Both are 30 years old, who brings a ton of experience to the Colts secondary. They also wouldn’t require a huge salary as both missed most of last season, with Jones missing the entire season. Jones tweeted back in February suggest he could be heading for retirement. Peters on the other hand could be a perfect fit for defensive coordinator Gus Bradley Cover 3 scheme. Here’s what we had to say about the potential of adding Peters. Fast forward to the 47:00 minute mark.

I began to watch the Colts when former Colts running back Marshall Faulk was the running back and Jim Harbaugh was the starting QB. It wasn’t until 1998 when Peyton Manning was selected with the first overall pick of the 1998 NFL draft, which solidified me as a fan of the Indianapolis Colts. I frequently travel to home games in Indianapolis and away games just so I could support my beloved team. Two of my greatest accomplishments are engaging with Colts fans on a Facebook group I created called “Horseshoe Mob” back in 2018. My other accomplishment is starting a podcast called “You Don’t Know JAC” with Chris Jackson and Austin Cook, which we have now renamed “Horseshoe Mob”. At the time I started the podcast, I had no idea it would start a brotherhood that would last for a lifetime.
